Such a garish slogan fires the imagination, leaving an indelible imprint on an ex- tensive canvas of real factual drama... Such a New Zealand-wide reputation with which Hastings was aptly labelled last century, has to a large extent stubbornly clung to Hawke's Bay's marketing centre of fruit and wool growing. Since the grim pioneering days of devastating fires in Heretaunga Street, the city has continued to be subjected to a series of multi-million dollar blazes in more recent times.

But today there's a major difference. Where the small unit of firemen 100 years back were ill- equipped and poorly treated with little reward, today's firefighters thrive on good conditions with good pay and the use of the most sophisticated scientific appliances and apparatus. Essentially though, they need to be fully qualified.

On a wide spectrum, this book covers the historic progress of the Hastings Fire Brigade from its founding in 1886 over its first century. It tells of the early struggles and turbulent times, of squabbles and frustrations; of the joyous advent of the celebrated steam engine and its day of renown, fighting a stubborn ship fire off Napier; it tells of an exception- ally massive Hastings blaze in 1907, when pumping operations were foiled by the Railways Department; of the brigade's colourful characters; it gives a vivid description of the trials of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake in which the fire station was wrecked. Interspersed touches on technology through an exciting century enhance the interest.

Uniquely, the book includes a chapter featuring something of the part womanfolk have played in the lives of their firemen, culminating in the acceptance of modern fire brigade reform. Inspired by dynamic leadership, the Hastings brigade ultimately emerged with the reputation of being the best equipped, best trained and most dedicated brigade in the New Zealand Fire Service.

A comprehensive selection of illustrations compliments this fulfilling historic saga.

Condition: this is a used book. In this book he shares that knowledge and deepens it with the diligent research he undertook in the final years of his life. Not content with simply describing colonial life on the river, as previous histories have done, he traces its evolution from geologic time, then through the millennium of Māori occupation to the arrival of the European settlers in the mid-nineteenth century.

This is a second-hand copy of the book Virtue Leads, Fortune Follows - A History of the Shand Family from Scotland to New Zealand. For 150 he acquired 100 acres in Riccarton, which entitled him to own four quarter-acre sections in Hereford Street. In 1859 he leased these sections to William Sefton Moorhouse, who was at that time Superintendent of Canterbury Province and remembered for constructing the Lyttelton-Christchurch rail tunnel. One year later, in 1860, Moorhouse built a small two-storeyed office at 88 Hereford Street, an unpretentious wooden building that in 1866 became sandwiched between the Royal Insurance and the former New Zealand Trust and Loan Company buildings respectively. Originally housing professional offices until it was converted to shops in 1977, Moorhouse's building became known as Shand's Emporium and although in its early days it faced a dirt road, it went on to be part of the bustle of the central city - and the oldest commercial building in the CBD. Amazingly, this historic structure survived the Canterbury earthquakes, and once again in 2012 stood alone on a dirt section in Hereford Street, an extraordinary survivor. Its future remains uncertain, but it is likely that it will be restored in another location. Like Shand's Emporium, the Shand family since their arrival in 1850 have survived, thrived and evolved, perceiving solid fundamentals and sound values to be at the heart of their foundations.

This is a second-hand copy of the book Kicking On - Through the History of Hunting in New Zealand.

Condition: This is a used book in good condition. In 1916 the Marlborough Timber Company logged one of the country’s last significant coastal forests in order to build the Dominion’s largest sawmill, with township, tramway and port facilities to match.

Like many other bush towns, Port Craig comprised the usual colourful mix of hardy kiwi bushmen and their families, and recent immigrants trying to eke out a living in their adopted country, plus a few others whose main aim was to keep clear of the law! Port Craig was home to the country’s largest and most technologically advanced sawmill. On its extensive bush tramway ran one of the largest tramway locomotives over New Zealand’s tallest tramway bridge, some years back the subject of a major restoration project. The Port Craig venture collapsed during the Depression and became a ghost town. The mighty viaducts still stand, bearing mute testimony to those pioneering efforts. The easily-graded tramway now provides trampers’ access to the magnificent Waitutu Forest. Never before has Port Craig’s fascinating story been told in a single comprehensive and well-illustrated volume.
