N.Z. Forest Products Ltd came into being in 1935, taking over the 100 million trees planted by Perpetual Forests Ltd in the 1920s. Today, measured in terms of turnover and profit, N.Z. Forest Products is one of New Zealand's two biggest companies. It owns or leases over 200,000 hectares of forest land; it earns a significant share of the $400 million that comes from the forest industry export; it influences our way of life in the southernmost parts of the country as well as the Northland peninsula.

But a company is primarily people and, in telling the story of N.Z. Forest Products, Brian Healy has concentrated on those who have played a part in a colourful development.

There were Landon Smith and Douglas Wylie, the adventurous pair who in the 1920s set up Perpetual Forests and saw bond-selling campaigns spread across the world.

There were men in the camps on the central North Island plateau who planted thousands of acres of pines on these wastelands.

There were stormy episodes, conflicts between strong personalities; at times it was difficult to see where the future lay. But Brian Healy, with fascinating detail, brings the story through to the present time when firm management and well-planned policy seem to indicate a secure future.
