From the blurb:

Gisborne is New Zealand's most easterly city and the first in the world to see the new rising sun each day. The connection of Gisborne by rail to the rest of the country did not prove an easy task. The first attempt to establish a link with the Bay of Plenty and Auckland reached almost 80 km into mountainous terrain before being abandoned. Another attempt to connect with Napier through the inland suffered a similar fate. It was not until after many setbacks and much perseverance that in 1942 Gisborne was connected with Napier along the present spectacular coastal route. This book tells the story of these railways as well as that of the Harbour Board lines and the Gentle Annie Tramway.

Chris Wood was born in 1955 and grew up in Gisborne. From an early age he was fascinated by the engineering that went into building the region's railway lines. He now lives on Waiheke Island with his wife and children, where he is involved in the construction industry.
