Writing with passion and eloquence, he took a view of the hardships and injustices suffered by Māori that would be shared by commentators today. He is already quoted in Treaty claims research and this book is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. Grace and his wife Agnes were at Gisborne (Turanga) 1850-1853, then established a mission at Pukawa on Lake Taupo, 1855-1863. He refused to be a chaplain to the forces and was thus able to travel through the Bay of Plenty, Taupo and the upper Waikato, facing many hazards and often starving with the people. He encouraged Māori enterprise and the retention of their lands. His letters target "the wretched expediency" of government policy, land grabbers, grog-sellers, the conduct of soldiery, the contracting of Māori road gangs. He criticised fellow missionaries for buying or grazing Māori land, abandoning their posts to serve the troops, turning to town parishes and alienating mission lands. He campaigned for renewed service to Māori and an autonomous Māori section of the Anglican church - with its own native bishop.
He took a sympathetic view of Hauhau and Ringatu.

https://www.atlantisbooks.co.nz/products/a-driven-man-missionary-thomas-s-grace-battling-for-maori-causes-amid-controversy-hardship-danger-by-david-grace
