Publishers blurb:
Published in1976, Arthur Grimwade's "London Goldsmiths" has come to be considered a serious contribution to the study. It provides an alphabetically arranged list of all known makers' marks from the commencement of the registers at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1697 to the year of Queen Victoria's accession. 3473 marks are reproduced from the actual registers and a further 441 from a variety of other sources. In addition to the main section on London makers' marks there is also an illustrated section covering provincial makers who registered their marks in London and another on unregistered marks with tentative attributions. Seven further sections list the marks of goldworkers and other specialists registered at Goldsmiths' Hall. There is also a large biographical dictionary of makers totalling 2553 names. Arthur Grimwade was, until his retirement, one of the senior directors of Christie's.
