"This book first appeared in 1986 as a limited edition. So rapid was the uptake that a second edition was released that year. "Waterways' covers not only the history of the Sounds but also the features that recognise them as one of NZ's most beautiful locations. although somewhere that had been largely overlooked, owing to its isolation. The author's association with the area dates back to the1920s, his wife's family being pioneer settlers in the 1850s. His account includes the activities of the orignal Maori residents, Cook's visit in 1770, initial European arrivals, and events up to the mid1900s. Few previous books on the "Sounds" ensured the Ponder history became a sought-after title."
