Book Review:
This publication comprises a collection of 18 papers presented at the second International Symposium of the Arts of Oceania, in Wellington in 1978, and the result is a unique book. A diverse range of writers gives the reader an in-depth insight into a cross-section of attitudes and beliefs which shape the function of art and artists in Oceania. In the main, the ethnologists are participant/observers who join in the daily rounds of the cultures they study, reflecting an impulse common to much Pacific art - the spirit of working together. The edition is an attractive paperback published simultaneously in New Zealand and the United States in 1983. Editors Sidney Mead and Bernie Kernot and designer Joanne Russ have done a fine job with the overall concept and layout. The emphasis throughout - text and photographs - is on the people, the makers of the art, the individuals. within strongly bonded groups. There are any amount of books around on Pacific artefacts and pattern motifs, but few that get to grips with the nitty-gritty in the way these essays do.
