Fabian Gottlieb Bellingshausen’s voyage of 1819-1821 was aimed primarily at exploring areas of the Antarctic left in some doubt by James Cook’s great voyages of exploration. Bellingshausen followed Cook to New Zealand, dropping anchor in the Sounds close to where the Englishman had refitted his ship. There, the Russian met the Maoris as yet little unaffected by the arrivals of Europeans and – even more important – Maoris whose settlements were to be wiped out within a very few years by inter-tribal warfare. The accounts of Bellingshausen and of his officers, translated from the originals, are here presented for the first time, with detailed comments and reproductions of artefacts purchased and taken back to Russia by the expedition.
