From the inside cover:

Papakura lies at the geographical centre of the region extending from the Auckland isthmus to the lower reaches of the Waikato River. Howick, Otahuhu and Papatoetoe are contained within the Manukau City boundaries; in Franklin County are Pukekohe, Tuakau and Waiuku. Historical events have had their effect one upon the other.

This book traces lucidly, comprehensively and with authority developments in Papakura and the Manukau region generally from the earliest Māori occupation.

The author makes an objective social study into an absorbing narrative. In many aspects, this becomes a view in a microcosm of New Zealand’s emergence as a nation – such as a story has a wide appeal. Factors which are unique to Papakura, its surrounding districts and the Manukau region are revealed so that this book becomes a worthy addition to the chronicles of local history in New Zealand.
