This is a second-hand copy of the book Dr Golan Maaka: Māori Doctor by Bradford Haami.

About the book:

DR GOLAN MAAKA is the story of a man caught between two races, two ways of practising medicine, two ways of living and working in the first half of the twentieth century.

Dr Golan Maaka's passion was to provide medical services to his people. Among his other passions were his whakapapa, the history of all civilizations, rugby, racing, and whisky.

A larger-than-life figure with a voracious appetite for knowledge, Golan Maaka qualified in medicine from Otago University in 1932. He spent six months in China with the Red Cross during the Sino-Japanese War, then returned to New Zealand where he set up surgery in Whakatāne. His rounds covered the Ureweras; his surgery was his home.

'As early as seven in the morning people would be sitting on the front lawn, on and under the pо̄hutukawa tree waiting for Golan's free medical services... By lunchtime, the Maaka homestead at 173 Commerce Street in Whakatāne looked like a hui on a marae.'

The author, Bradford Haami, is Dr Maaka's grandson. His knowledge of Māoritanga and of his own whakapapa is extensive. He is well known as a filmmaker and television journalist.

Note on condition: this is a used book. The condition is fair, but it does have a little bit of wear around the edges and some small dog-earing. It has obviously been loved and read, and there is a note in pen on the first page from Christmas 1995.
