This interesting study follows the pattern of development of the Chinese community in New Zealand, particularly from the viewpoint of those who were born in the country. Among the first Chinese to arrive in NZ were those attracted by the gold rush of the 1860s, though virtually all men. However, the Chinese community remained small and largely separate until post-World War Two when larger numbers joined the earlier arrivals. It is these and the following generations that are the main focus of Manying Ip's excellent book on how attitudes of acceptance and assimilation changed while cultural values were preserved, although more recent widespread immigration from Asia set new challenges for them, some being fifth-generation NZ-Chinese. The author came to NZ in 1974 and when this book (her second on the topic) was published she was a lecturer at Auckland University Department of Asian Languages and Literature.
