Bruce Lockhart was Acting Consul-General in Moscow when the first revolution broke out in 1917. He was sent home in September of that year because of an affair with a married woman. In January 1918 he was again in Russia, this time as 'British Agent', or head of the British Mission to the Bolsheviks, official diplomatic relations having been broken off. He got to know Trotsky well, witnesses the course of the revolution, and was eventually imprisoned in the dreaded Loubianka Prison, where he came close to being shot, before being exchanged for the Russian diplomat Litvinov, who was held in Britain as a counter-hostage.
