The largest earthquake ever recorded in New Zealand occurred in Cook Strait on 23 January 1855. It was felt mostly in Wellington and the Wairarapa, but also in Nelson and Marlborough and as far north as Taranaki and Napier and south as Christchurch, as well as by those on board ships at sea. There were landslides and cracking of the earth in the Horowhenua and Manawatu areas.

The reactions of the settlers are told in their own words and there is extensive descriptions of the damage that occurred. There are even copies of some repair bills.

Some history of former earthquakes felt by Maori before Europeans arrived in NZ; and others felt in the area prior to this one.
