Mairoa: 100 Years On ~ Mairoa is about 400 metres above sea level and is a seemingly endless mass of easy hills broken only by small gullies. To the west are the Pomerangi's the long range of high country between Mairoa and the Tasman Sea. To the south the land falls off and drains into the Mangaotaki River. In the early 1920's economic depression prevailed and this was the last straw for many families who walked off their fern and ragwort-covered holdings, their rough ponga whares and left their starving and dying livestock. In the Mairoa district, only the Voyce's were able to hold on. Out of 106 settlers who took up lands in the greater area of Mairoa, Waitanguru, Ngapaenga and Mangaotaki, 55 of them had left their farms by 1940. Today there are only five farms still being farmed by descendants of the original settlers.
