The Kiwi and the Silver Fern are the most popular of "emblems" by which New Zealand is known. The fern choice recognises that NZ probably had more species of these plants than any other country. These range from tiny, dainty specimens to large tree ferns. Dobbie's excellent book was first published in 1916 with this fourth, revised edition following in 1951. This edition has 31 chapters on genera which include 134 species and 24 varieties, each of which is generally illustrated with sharp and detailed full-page photographs by F W Birch. Smaller photos cover detail and other general aspects of habitat etc. 406 pages including Maori names for ferns, popular names and general index, b/w photos throughout.
