In May 1929, 21 year old Garlick Martin rode his horse into the wilderness south of Rotorua, to find land to develop a farm on a virgin block of tussock and scrub at Ngakuru, the last frontier. This is a story about how Garlick and his wife Hazel (nee Ford) carried on the pioneering spirit of their ancestors in New Zealand, and the difficulties they overcame in establishing their farm on a foreboding volcanic landscape.
