The 2 volumes cover all the locomotives introduced into the South African railways system up to the last steam locomotive design in 1955. To complete the record of steam in South Africa, it also includes a full account of the many small harbour-board locomotives which operated at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban between 1873 and 1904.
