From the inside cover:

People and personalities who helped shape the Rangitikei are explored in this history, which revives many little-known stories of their achievements and adds new light to them. The many photos reflect the lifestyle of an interesting age in the district's past. There is mention of James Bull, the Chelsea carpenter, who founded Bulls township in the early 1860's; Edward Newman whose ideal was to set up Flock House Training Farm; William Fox, the talented artist and politician; Seaforth McKenzie, the 16-year-old who became the youngest pilot in New Zealand; Dr Elizabeth Gunn, founder of the Children's Health Camps; and more... Life at Port Rangitikei, the birth of Hunterville, the skills of Marton sports people, and the nostalgic days of the 1920's are recaptured, as are the times of the swagger and the pioneer settlers and their wives.
