Laurie Gluckman was qualified to practice in a number of medical fields and his study of medical facilities, diseases, and treatment for both Maori and Europeans up to 1860. This book explores a subject of which little had previously been recorded in a comprehensive manner. Part one covers the early contact between Maori and European and medical practices; in part two the diseases of the Maori, their remedies, treatments and the impact of the Europeans on their health are examined; part three looks at diseases in more detail and at Maori traditional attitudes, care and beliefs regarding various health matters.
