Robert Maunsell was one of New Zealand's most influential early missionaries. An Irish Protestant, he came to New Zealand in 1835 under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society, becoming one of the leaders of the second wave of missionaries who advanced from the Bay of Islands into the Manukau, the Waikato and further south. In the next thirty years, as Superintendent of the Waikato mission, Maunsell established three missions and became expert in Maori. Among his greatest achievements were his translation of the Old Testament into Māori and his successful development of boarding schools for Māori children.
