Back in 1850 John Shand was one of the first 20 settlers to purchase land in Canterbury. For 150 he acquired 100 acres in Riccarton, which entitled him to own four quarter-acre sections in Hereford Street. In 1859 he leased these sections to William Sefton Moorhouse, who was at that time Superintendent of Canterbury Province and remembered for constructing the Lyttelton-Christchurch rail tunnel. One year later, in 1860, Moorhouse built a small two-storeyed office at 88 Hereford Street, an unpretentious wooden building that in 1866 became sandwiched between the Royal Insurance and the former New Zealand Trust and Loan Company buildings respectively. Originally housing professional offices until it was converted to shops in 1977, Moorhouse's building became known as Shand's Emporium and although in its early days it faced a dirt road, it went on to be part of the bustle of the central city - and the oldest commercial building in the CBD. Amazingly, this historic structure survived the Canterbury earthquakes, and once again in 2012 stood alone on a dirt section in Hereford Street, an extraordinary survivor. Its future remains uncertain, but it is likely that it will be restored in another location. Like Shand's Emporium, the Shand family since their arrival in 1850 have survived, thrived and evolved, perceiving solid fundamentals and sound values to be at the heart of their foundations.
