This is widely acknowledged as one of the most important and informative books ever to appear on the subject of horology. This is a facsimile edition produced on the 50th anniversary of the original publication by Methuen. This book contains information about early watches which is still not available elsewhere. It is not exclusively about the earliest watches however, it is a proper history covering nearly four centuries with an emphasis on original development. The illustrations fall into three groups - Watch cases, dials and movements are reproduced in 189 black and white photographs plus 35 in full colour. - all of enamels. These groups are supplemented by 82 line drawings of mechanisms from balances and escapements to striking work and chronographs.
