Flora and fauna flourish in Wanganui's Bushy Park Forest Reserve, a mainland island sanctuary and conservation success story. Kiwi, kereru, tieke and toutouwai fill the forest with sound and colour largely absent in the large decades of the 20th century. Their return is the result of a determined battle to rid the lowland forest of pests and keep them out with a New Zealand designed predator fence. Author Penny Robinson tells how the sanctuary was created. She records the struggle of a group of committed conservationists as they wrested the rare rata and pukatea forest from the group of introduced pests. Included in the tale is the vision of the bachelor farmer who bequeathed his Edwardian homestead and the forest to Forest and Bird in 1962. The fascinating tale of his family, their involvement in the Taranaki Wars, the introduction of Scots-style farming, the development of a horse and cattle stud, and later conservation efforts is told in a lively manner.
