The Leander of this story is the sister ship of the Achilles, cruisers of the 'Leander' class, and important units of the New Zealand Navy during World War Two. She was at sea on active service for a great part of the war, in New Zealand's home waters, the Tasman and South Pacific, in the Indian Ocean, RedSea, and the Mediterranean, and latterly back in the Pacific when the focus of naval operations switched against Japan.
